Dorothy Dandridge is a quintessential example for how to achieve both a classy and sexy look. With her glowing skin, dark lashes, rosy cheeks and signature red lips, Dandridge was known for her beautiful makeup. She had a way of balancing her sultriness with grace and elegance, embracing several classic silhouettes.

Known for her work in the 1954 film, “Carmen Jones,” Dandridge’s career shot to super stardom and solidified her name as the first African-American to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. Dandridge was a trailblazing, multi-talented star and real “triple threat” — an actress, dancer and singer.

Born Nov. 9, 1922, to character actor Ruby Dandridge, Dorothy was destined for the stage. Hitting the scene early with her sister, Vivian, the duo formed a song-and-dance team dubbed the “The Wonder Children.” They later joined friend Etta John as “The Dandridge Sisters.”

Dandridge, like beauty icon, Marilyn Monroe, inspired today’s defined dark brow with bold lips look. The eyes and lips were essential for her. She wore bold, orange-red lipsticks with neutral shadow, paired with black liquid eyeliner.

Dandridge’s hair offered another signature to her iconic look. Keeping her hair cut short and curly, Dandridge accentuated her high cheek bones, slender face and long neck. Her life has mesmerized Hollywood for decades with her femme fatale look, dark curls and seductive eyes.

To get Dorothy’s look for less opt for a thick, perfectly groomed brows with a high arch. Don’t be afraid to use a little extra eyebrow powder than usual. For a more dramatic look, add a few false lashes before applying mascara.

Dandridge was all about embracing your natural beauty. Pick dresses that emphasize your curves and that complement your shape. And don’t forget the sexy orange-red lipstick to tie it all together!
