U.S. Open Celebrates HBCUs

HBCU LIVE AT THE U.S. OPEN: Howard University’s “Showtime” Marching Band performed throughout the National Tennis Center, including on a recreation of The Yard. The U.S. Open also honored tennis champions such as Althea Gibson of FAMU and the late New York Mayor David Dinkins, a Howard alumnus. “HBCU Live” featured Howard’s band on court during a ceremony to announce a fund to support HBCU tennis coaches in Dinkins’ name. An avid tennis player, Dinkins was a close friend of Gibson and a strong supporter of the U.S. Open.
