It all started with a student in the Howard University Marching Band who created YouTube videos teaching her fellow peers about how to care for their natural hair. Whether it was about hair porosity, giving the hair protein, or creating different braid styles, she always did it with a fun and quirky personality. The channel was “The Land of OOO” and it was pretty good. She put a temporary stop to it when she attended Howard University, joined the SHOWTIME Marching Band, and enrolled in the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts. It was then during her time at Howard that she decided to make a profit off of her talents.
She began braiding fellow band students’ hair and giving them creative and fresh styles for them to rock on Howard’s Pcampus. With the Instagram page @ooo.shedidthat, clients DM the page and ask what they want and she explains the price. They set the day and time to meet up and she works her magic. They loved the work that she did so much that they spread the word about her work. Once she began to give prices and saw how much people loved her work, she created an Instagram page for her newfound business, and “OOO. She Did That!” was born. With many styles available such as knotless braids, invisible locs using the two-strand method, cornrows, butterfly locs, etc. she is changing the game when it comes to HBCU hairstylists.
Oloyede transferred to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (also known as FAMU) and is currently marching as an alto saxophonist for the Marching 100. Her business is flourishing in Tallahassee, Florida. Her name is Oluwamodupe Oloyede, Dupe for short, and she discussed the beginnings of her personal journey with 101 Magazine. More specifically, how even before she made her YouTube channel, she was already an entrepreneur.
“Going from YouTube to being an Entrepreneur I kinda always been an entrepreneur even while I was doing that. I was selling food and selling snacks since middle school and I’ve always been fascinated with hair like even my own hair, natural hair, and I’ve been fascinated with my styles.” Oloyede expressed this to 101 Magazine.
She also expressed how growing up, the stylists from her childhood braided faster and prices were not as expensive as stylists charge now. She stated that if the desired style takes longer than 12 hours and needs to be intricate, the client should be prepared to be charged between $180-$200. But it relatively is a more affordable price for college students, her primary clientele. Whom she would not expect to pay $300-$400. She did state that if she were to get more notoriety and celebrities were interested, she jokingly stated she would raise the price to $300-$400.
“Me personally, I don’t really charge more than I’m willing to pay and that’s with an asterisk. I know it takes me a long time to braid, and as an entrepreneur, I’m my own boss so I have to make a liveable wage.”
OOO. She Did That!’s prices depend on the style and length of time it takes, but on a price list on her Instagram account, the most expensive style on the list is Goddess Knotless braids which cost $230. The most affordable are mini twists which cost $60.
Dupe Oloyede ultimately wants the customer to be confident in their natural hair and their natural beauty and reassures her clients. “We’re gonna talk about why you should love your hair in this style before you get it and after you get it. Not just when your hair is tucked away.” Oloyede explains to 101. She also loves to see Bantu knots and cornrows get the proper name and black people get the proper credit for those styles.
“OOO. She Did That!” is currently operating in Tallahassee, FL at the moment, but you can expect to book in Atlanta, GA as well. DM the Instagram page @ooo.shedidthat for booking appointments.
