World AIDS Day, celebrated each year on December 1, is a global moment to honor the millions of lives impacted by HIV/AIDS, highlight advancements in treatment and prevention, and rally for an HIV-free future.
This year, in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., Joe Biden’s administration hosted a unique display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt at the White House; a powerful patchwork commemorating those lost to the epidemic. The quilt is a vivid reminder of the love, loss and resilience of the HIV/AIDS community.
HIV/AIDS Quick Facts
- HIV doesn’t discriminate: According to UNAIDS, over 39 million people live with HIV worldwide, and 1 in 5 new U.S. cases occurs in young people aged 13–24.
- Treatment saves lives: Thanks to antiretroviral therapy (ART), people living with HIV can live long, healthy lives. According to the CDC, the virus can become undetectable and untransmittable with proper treatment. U=U isn’t just a catchy slogan—it’s life-changing science.
- We have the tools to prevent it: HIV.Gov states that PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a game-changer in HIV prevention, and regular testing is your best wingman in staying informed and healthy.
