On Feb. 9, 2025, the Kansas City Chiefs took on the Philadelphia Eagles at the 59th Super Bowl in Las Vegas, Nevada.
With a diverse student body, Howard University students had various opinions on the event. Many students from Kansas City and Philadelphia were excited to see their hometown teams in the Super Bowl.
The Philadelphia Eagles returned to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2018. In that game, the Eagles played against the Kansas City Chiefs and lost the game 38-35. With the chance of returning against the same team they lost to, fans were excited about the matchup.
“It’s a wonderful feeling. I know not many teams really get to experience this at all. So experiencing this two times in four years… is really great,” said Samson Williams, a Howard University student from Philadelphia.
For students from Kansas City, many said that seeing their team return for a chance at a third championship win in a row is amazing because it would have been the first time that an NFL team would win the Super Bowl three years in a row.
“I’m very excited. It feels different because we’re going for a third time in a row and we have an opportunity to make history this go round,” said Robert Hill, a Howard University student from Kansas City.
While many Howard students were excited, online the temperature was even hotter. There were numerous complaints about the Kansas City Chiefs heading back to the Super Bowl. Many fans believe that the Chiefs received favoritism throughout the past season due to questionable play calls by the referees in games. This included pass interference calls against opposing teams and roughing the passer calls against defenders.
The Chiefs often have significantly lower penalty calls in games against their opponents. These factors caused fans to react negatively to the Chiefs and Eagle’s return to the Super Bowl.
Despite people being upset online about seeing two teams that have competed in the Super Bowl before, many Howard students were excited about the game.
“It could be redundant, but at the same time I do feel like this game will bring a different aspect that we may not have seen before but you will never know until the game has started,” said Howard University student Sean Mitchell.
Despite various opinions on the teams playing, many students tuned in to see how the game would play out. Watch parties were held at multiple places around campus including the Blackburn ballroom, Bethune Annex Cafe and in dormitories so students across campus could enjoy the game.
