At noon on March 31st, Elections Commissioner Sarah Slaughter stood at a podium on the steps of Douglas Hall to announce the winners of the 2023-2024 election season. An in-person and online audience watched winners get their sashes and stand for pictures.

Campus-wide races were saved for the end and it was announced Armaní NaJaé Washington and Mahlon West won Miss and Mister Howard University and Nia Naylor and Murphy Jones IV won the 2023-2024 Howard University Student Association (HUSA) executive president and vice president.

Naylor, a junior political science major from New Castle, Delaware, and her running mate Jones IV, a sophomore political science major from Fortworth, Texas, ran under the platform, “The Bison Print.” Pillars of their platform included plans to work with Student Affairs and Residence Life to solve pressing issues, mentorship programs pairing freshmen with upperclassmen, expanding networking opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, and more.

Naylor, 2022-2023 HUSA Senate vice chairwoman, and Jones, the 2022-2023 Mister College of Arts and Sciences, bring their previous on-campus leadership expertise and administrative relationships to their newly-elected positions.

Washington is a junior honors broadcast journalism major from Chicago, Illinois. Grabbing the attention of many with her creative visuals promoting her platform, her platform “How to Get Away With Truth & Service.” Washington wants to focus on balancing the service people put in on campus while still maintaining their own truth, and supporting each other and their student leaders with an additional emphasis on mental health.

Mahlon West looked to inspire students and create a better Howard experience by “revitalizing, rebuilding, and rebranding.” The junior health management major from Atlanta ran on the platform “Not All Heroes Wear Capes.” West plans to promote “bison safety” through self-defense courses, community service initiatives, a mentorship program, and increased opportunities to meet with professionals in mental health.
