On Nov. 19th, 96.3 WHUR radio station hosted its annual Food2Feed Radiothon, a community effort aimed at fighting against food insecurity in the DMV area.
This year, Howard’s Alternative Spring Break (HUASB) committee played a significant role in the success of the event. Students were stationed along Georgia Avenue, participating in a bucket brigade to collect donations from passing drivers.
The 12-hour event gathered donations to provide holiday meals to families in need. WHUR listeners sent their contributions in online donations, cash and check drop-offs at the station’s Howard University studios.
Leah Kabuya, the director of wellness for HUASB, explained the purpose of their involvement.:
“Food2Feed occurs every year and HUASB comes and helps out, and we are raising money with WHUR to provide food for families in need during the Thanksgiving season,” she said. “To get involved you can follow HUASB on Instagram and if we are doing it that year you can find the information to sign up,” Kabuya said.

Re’Ann Fletcher, one of the student volunteers, said she participated to help those in need.
“Working toward accessible healthy food for communities that don’t really have it is an important topic for me,” she said. “So doing stuff like this, making sure families that don’t get the food that they need, can, with the help of other people.”
In regard to the donations, both from listeners and motorists, Howard University’s GiveCampus states, “100% of your tax-deductible donation benefits the Capital Area Food Bank and Shabach Ministries, Inc.” (GiveCampus, 2024).
When asked about her experience of collecting donations, Re’Ann shared,
“I feel like as we go up to the cars, the more we cheer, the more they’re likely to donate to us,” said Fletcher. “But you know, we often get people that just drive by or like speed off and pretend they don’t see us. But we’re still out here trying to do our best.”
According to GiveCampus, the 46th Annual Food2Feed campaign has already raised $47,590, surpassing its $40,000 goal, and will remain open for an additional 7 days (GiveCampus, 2024).
