Housing Town Hall Recap: What You Missed!

The Department of Student Affairs and Howard University Residence Life (HU Res Life) hosted their first of several town halls yesterday, April 5, to inform students and parents about the university’s housing plans and important dates and changes for the 2023-2024 school year. 

One change is the mandatory housing orientation. All students—continuing and first-time-in-college (FTIC)—living in university housing are required to attend the housing orientation.  Gender-inclusive housing will be available upon request.

HU Res Life upholds that only first and second-year students are the only demographic guaranteed on-campus housing. Mazza Grandmarc and WISH are available for upperclassmen.

According to the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, Glenn Vinson, the first 150 students who apply to WISH will be guaranteed housing. WISH, located on Connecticut Avenue, is open to juniors. 

This is the third academic year upperclassmen have been able to live at Mazza Grandmarc. Located along Baltimore Avenue in College Park, Maryland, Mazza Grandmarc is a 30-minute drive from campus, but there is a campus shuttle available.

Other upperclassmen searching for housing off-campus can attend the upcoming virtual off-campus housing fair hosted by the Office of Off-Campus Resources. The office referenced their off-campus housing website to assist students in beginning their search. Additionally, applications for upperclassmen interested in being resident assistants (RA) are opening soon. Informational webinars about the RA position will be held next Monday and Tuesday. 

Summerhouse is available to those enrolled in summer school. These students have the option to live in College Hall South or Howard Plaza Towers West.

Below are dates students and parents should be aware of:

April 18 to May 18 — Housing portal open. The housing portal is where one can pay the $200 housing deposit. 

May 2 to June 2 — Housing application available for continuing students. In the housing application, students can choose where they’d like to live and select roommates. 

First week of July: Housing assignments will be released. The Office of Residence Life will release housing assignments to select students. 

Student-athletes will receive their move-in dates from ResLife respective to last name and specific residence halls. 

The Real Estate Development Capital Asset Management (REDCAM) is responsible for housing development, maintenance and problems that HU Res Life is unable to solve, mostly concerning the facilities themselves.
