Howard senior Camilla Egbula (bib 1933) leads the pack during the women’s 800 meters at the Raleigh Relays.
Two seniors from Howard University delivered record-breaking performances this past weekend, rewriting the program’s all-time list at one of the nation’s premier collegiate track meets.
Camille Egbula and Marcia Sey each shattered school records at the Raleigh Relays on Saturday, showcasing not only their elite talent but the depth of Howard’s women’s track program. Egbula set a new mark in the 800 meters with a time of 2:08.37, while Sey ran 12.76 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles claiming another Howard record.
For Sey, the performance adds to an already historic resume. She now holds two school records—Saturday’s 100-meter hurdles time joins her previous record in the 60-meter hurdles.
“I knew I could hit that number all season,” Egbula said. “When I hit the final curve, I told myself, ‘You’ve got more. Go get it.’ I didn’t even look at the clock until after I crossed the line. When I saw 2:08, I just froze for a second.”
The Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State University, attracted dozens of Division I programs and many of the country’s top track athletes. The high-level competition gave both Egbula and Sey the stage to deliver their best.
“I knew it was going to be a fast field, but I didn’t come out here to lose. I was just trying to win my lane,” Sey said. “Once I got over that fifth hurdle clean, I could feel my rhythm clicking. Everything felt smooth.”
Their head coach, David Oliver, praised both athletes for their performance and the energy they bring to the program.
“Camilla and Marcia have been rocks for us,” Oliver said. “They show up every day, lead by example, and now they’re seeing it pay off. These aren’t flukes, they’ve been practicing this.”
Egbula’s mark lowered the previous 800-meter record by nearly a full second, while Sey’s 12.76 in the hurdles puts her among the top hurdlers in the MEAC and well within range for NCAA postseason qualification.
Both athletes are expected to be key contenders as Howard approaches the MEAC Outdoor Championships later this spring. With their experience and momentum, they’ll likely play a major role in Howard’s push for a conference title.
“This is it for us,” Sey said. “We want to walk away knowing we gave everything we had for this team.”
